Biography
Gerald Laing emerged as a leading British artist in the 1960s, gaining early recognition while still a student at Saint Martin’s School of Art. He spent much of that decade in New York, creating iconic Pop art paintings of celebrities and pop culture symbols that positioned him within both the British and American Pop movements. By the late 1960s, Laing’s work shifted toward abstraction and sculpture, aligning with New York’s evolving art scene. After moving to the Scottish Highlands in 1969, he embraced more robust materials and forms, and by 1973 had turned to figurative sculpture in bronze, becoming a prominent figure in this field. Laing returned to painting in 2003, addressing contemporary subjects with powerful works on the Iraq War and modern cultural icons.
